Retina is the third inner coat of the eye, which is responsible for creating a picture of the image you see when the focused light hits it, and sending it to the brain through the optic nerve, to make vision possible. Any problem in the retina can cause serious problems like retinal tears, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, which may result in vision loss, and thus blindness. This is why it is very important to take care of the retina, and resolve even the slightest issue seen to avoid vision degradation.

Retinal tears/detachment

Ageing may cause tears in the retina, or even severe retinal detachment. Any other eye problems or eye injuries may also cause the same. The problem may begin as a retinal tear, which will cause fluid to leak through the tear, which slowly and gradually may separate the retina from the back of the eye, causing complete retinal detachment. A retinal tear or detachment can be detected if you experience a sudden blurred vision, floaters, of light flashes. You’ll need a retina specialist at the earliest to heal your tears, or seal the retina back in place in the case of retinal detachment.

Macular degeneration

As we age, yellowish deposits called drusen form under the retina. As the drusen increase in size and number, they can interfere with the functioning of the retina, thus damaging the light-sensitive cells of the macula. This blurs the central vision; and as the problem progressives, it may lead to complete vision loss. Another reason for macular degeneration could be the abnormal growth of blood vessels behind the retina, which leak blood and fluid, thus causing damage. In any case, you’ll need a retina specialist to diagnose and treat your condition. So, look out for any symptoms of macular degeneration, and have your condition treated at the earliest. Some of the most common symptoms of this condition include blurred reading, decrease in brightness of colours, need for brighter light to see and read, black spot in the field of vision, sudden painless decline in central vision, and visual distortions.

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a retinal complication that is caused in the eyes of diabetic patients. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the retina, which is caused when the blood sugar gets too high in diabetic patients; thus causing vision loss or blindness. You can identify diabetic retinopathy when you experience floaters, fluctuating vision, impaired colour vision, or dark empty areas in your vision.

In any of the above cases and other such retinal problems, you’ll need a retina specialist to identify and treat your condition effectively and at the earliest.
